Horizontal
clay bricks and weather, what a combination!
Originally
designed to repair the portion of exterior chimneys
that fail due to freeze thaw cycles in moisture
abosorbing clay bricks, chimney shingles have
shown much more promise. Snow and rain lay
on the bricks at the point where the back of the
fire place becomes the chimney.
Bricks at this point will absorb moisture
from rain and melting snow. When this trapped
mositure freezes, it expands causing the brick
to flake apart.
Wyevale
Precast Chimney Shingles provide smooth concrete
surfaces to shed this water from the bricks. Each
shingle has a sloped face and a drip groove to
keep the water off the brick below.
Chimney
Shingles are also used to make caps for irregular
shaped and multi flue chimneys. Sections
are cut to fit around the perimeter of the chimney
with an appropriate overhang. The Shingles
are mortared into place and the area inside the
Shingles is filled with a good quality concrete
mix troweled to provide adequate drainage. Drip
grooves on the overhang keep the moisture off
the bricks below.
