Every year customers come to us with problems that they feel are unique to themselves.  It usually turns out that there are many people who have found themselves in similar situations.  Here at Wyvale Precast we enjoy helping people solve these problems and in turn usually expanding our product line.

Horizontal clay bricks and weather, what a combination!

Originally designed to repair the portion of exterior chimneys that fail due to freeze thaw cycles in moisture abosorbing clay bricks, chimney shingles have shown much more promise.  Snow and rain lay on the bricks at the point where the back of the fire place becomes the chimney.  Bricks at this point will absorb moisture from rain and melting snow.  When this trapped mositure freezes, it expands causing the brick to flake apart.

Wyevale Precast Chimney Shingles provide smooth concrete surfaces to shed this water from the bricks.  Each shingle has a sloped face and a drip groove to keep the water off the brick below.

Chimney Shingles are also used to make caps for irregular shaped and multi flue chimneys.  Sections are cut to fit around the perimeter of the chimney with an appropriate overhang.  The Shingles are mortared into place and the area inside the Shingles is filled with a good quality concrete mix troweled to provide adequate drainage.  Drip grooves on the overhang keep the moisture off the bricks below.

Heavy rains are often as damaging as any other weather condition that can occur in our area.  Spring runoff is another source of excess water.  If the rain comes gently or the snow melts slowly there is seldom a problem.  Quick melts and heavy rain may flood garages and basements causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Drainage gutters with grated covers catch this water before it can become a problem.  Excess water is then diverted through "Big O" pipe to a dry well or other suitable drainage area.  The grates are strong enough for personal vehicles, and can be lifted for removal of dirt and debris.  Solid concrete covers area also available where grates are not needed or wanted.

Take a walk through the older section of any town and you will see these everywhere.  A masonry column rises about three or four feet up from a deck stopping with a stone or concrete cap.  Upon this cap bears a wooden or steel post which in turn holds up a roof over a porch or veranda.  Easy to find thirty years ago, masons today were forced to use sloped post caps or bricks laid on their side.

Our 4 inch (100mm) transition cap features a chiseled stone face in two common sizes.  21 inch by 21 inch (530mm x 530mm) for decorative concrete blocks and 18 inch by 18 inch for brick posts. Each transition cap has a tooled drip groove and an anchoring hole for the column hardware.

Digging up your backyard, looking for the septic tank access hatches, seems to be one of the least favourite jobs around the home.  It always happens at the worst of times.

Wyvale Precast has developed a kit to help locate these access hatches, and eliminate the digging required to expose them.  An idea borrowed from the builders of rail ways, 2 inch (50mm) thick rectangular riser sections are stacked up to the appropriate thickness and capped with a reinforced patio stone.  A row of pavers around the patio stone, keeps the soil away from the hole. The exsisting hatch cover will fit through the riser sections to expose the septic tank.  Although this kit was designed to fit Wyevale Concrete septic tanks, it can be modified to other manufacturers tanks.  For tanks burried deeper, other options are available.
